In February of 2020, teacher and writer Bryan Starchman set out on a four month trek to visit all fifty states. It was the 60th anniversary of John Steinbeck's road trip that eventually became the travelogue "Travels with Charley: In Search of America" (1962). Nothing could stop Starchman as he packed his car, took a sabbatical from teaching high school, and headed east from California. Nothing, that is, except for a pandemic.Compiled for the first time, here are all of The Travels with Starchman articles that were featured on The National Steinbeck Center's travel blog and were originally published in the Mariposa Gazette (the longest continuously published weekly newspaper in the state of California). All twenty of the original articles have been expanded, detailing the further misadventures of traveling author Bryan Starchman as he searches for his America in the time of COVID-19.
